What's in a name?

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself".
William Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet", Act II, Scene II

I have often contemplated the metaphysical meaning of names, and I resolutely stand by the concept that not only do our names shape part of other people's impression of us and reaction towards us, but I firmly believe our own impression of our names forms a major part of how we present ourselves to the world ....

The fact that I usually think about the multitudes of possibilities this world is built on is not a secret. I am a long time fan of chaos theory and it is the absolute randomness of events that I consider as the most appealing feature of life and one of the few reasons to enjoy living!

Quick example to clarify my point: I spent the most amazing 30 hours of my life thanks to random events that could never have happened by immaculate conception or planned design .... (1) trip to Greece is canceled at the last minute because of work demands, (2) being high season for let's-get-the-fuck-out-of-here-and-go-ANYWHERE-with-sun travel in the northern country where I live meant that I had no option but to go to Barcelona [great city by the way and I strongly recommend it to everyone! ... leave me a comment if you need tips or recommendations], (3) I do something completely against my nature and let myself be persuaded by a friend to go to a gay sauna, (4) at the same time my gorgeous South American heartthrob hails from his Equatorial country on a 4-day mission to Spain and coincidentally decides to make his virginal trip to a gay sauna at the same time that I do .... what follows is a story of us overcoming the language barriers [he doesn't speak English, so we had to rely on my poor Spanish] and have the best 30 hours in both our lives [so far!].

Anyway, applying the concept of randomness to our names, I sometimes wonder how different I would have turned out to be and my life would have been if I had a different name.

But more cynically, how different would the following result had been if I had chosen to drop my grand-father's name and went with the name I usually use .... you see, someone sent me this link and I decided to check it out since I didn't have anything better to do this lovely Saturday night [was supposed to go out with a guy I like and been out on a couple of dates with, and was planning to take it to the next step tonight until he texted me- not even called- saying he was feeling ill!] .... I just want to say that I was baffled at how accurate the description is of me!

There are 30 letters in your name.
Those 30 letters total to 115
There are 12 vowels and 18 consonants in your name.

What your first name means:

MuslimMaleGenerous. Noble.
ArabicMaleGenerous; a friend. The Koran lists generosity as one of 99 qualities of God.

Your number is: 7

The characteristics of #7 are: Analysis, understanding, knowledge, awareness, studious, meditating.

The expression or destiny for #7:
Thought, analysis, introspection, and seclusiveness are all characteristics of the expression number 7. The hallmark of the number 7 is a good mind, and especially good at searching out and finding the truth. You are so very capable of analyzing, judging and discriminating, that very little ever escapes your observation and deep understanding. You are the type of person that can really get involved in a search for wisdom or hidden truths, often becoming an authority on whatever it is your are focusing on. This can easily be of a technical or scientific nature, or it may be religious or occult, it matters very little, you pursue knowledge with the same sort of vigor. You can make a very fine teacher, or because of a natural inclination toward the spiritual, you may become deeply emerged in religious affairs or even psychic explorations. You tend to operate on a rather different wavelength, and many of your friends may not really know you very well. The positive aspects of the 7 expression are that you can be a true perfectionist in a very positive sense of the word. You are very logical, and usually employ a quite rational approach to most things you do. You can be so rational at times that you almost seem to lack emotion, and when you are faced with an emotional situation, you may have a bit of a problem coping with it. You have excellent capabilities to study and learn really deep and difficult subjects, and to search for hidden fundamentals. At full maturity you are likely to be a very peaceful and poised individual.

If there is an over supply of the number 7 in your makeup, the negative aspects of the number may be apparent. The chief negative of 7 relates to the limited degree of trust that you may have in people. A tendency to be highly introverted can make you a bit on the self-centered side, certainly very much self-contained . Because of this, you are not very adaptable, and you may tend to be overly critical and intolerant. You really like to work alone, at your own pace and in your own way. You neither show or understand emotions very well.

Your Soul Urge number is: 1

A Soul Urge number of 1 means:
Your Soul Urge is the number 1. With a Soul Urge number of 1, you want to lead and direct, to work independent of supervision, by yourself or with subordinates. You take pride in your abilities and want to be recognized for them. You may seek opportunities to display your strength and usefulness, wanting to create and originate. In your desire to manage the big picture and the main issues, you may often leave the details to others.

The positive 1 Soul Urge is Ambitious and determined, a leader seeking opportunities. There is a great deal of honesty and loyalty in this character. If you possess positive 1 Soul Urge qualities, you are very attainment oriented and driven to success. You are a loyal friend and strictly fair in your business dealings.

The negative side of the 1 Soul Urge must be avoided. A negative 1 is apt to dominate situations and people; the home, the spouse, the family and the business. Emotions aren't strong in this nature. If you possess an excess of 1 energy, you may, at times, be boastful and egotistic. You must avoid being too critical and impatient of trifles. The great need of the 1 Soul Urge is the development of friendliness, and a sincere interest in people.

Your Inner Dream number is: 6

An Inner Dream number of 6 means:
You dream of guiding and fostering the perfect family in the perfect home. You crave the devotion from offspring and a loving spouse. You picture yourself in the center of a successful domestic unit.

If this is real, they are fucking good .... if this is just a standard description automatically generated by the Google servers in California and it happened to pick this one, then it just proves my point about randomness of life!

Try out yourself and let me know which is it ....

Everything I love/hate about Cairo

Thanks to an increasingly globalized industry, I have been working and living in Cairo (Egypt) for a couple of months now ... and while the transition back from the laid-back Copenhagen to the mother of the world (Umm il-Doniya)- as Cairenes so arrogantly and so rightfully call their city- has been less than smooth I am amazed how much of the small things about Cairo I still miss and cherish!

I saw this picture on the BBC news website this morning- scanning the world news on BBC is a daily ritual I haven't been able to lose- and it eloquently summarizes all I love and hate about the center and the matron of the world ...

The caption of this brilliant picture shot by a very perceptive Amr Nabil for the Associated Press reads: "An Egyptian bread seller rides through Cairo’s traffic. High food prices and shortages of subsidised bread have sparked widespread anger and a series of strikes in Egypt".

The vibrant buzz of Cairo city life makes it truly the city that never sleeps! Despite the fact that New York (NY) wrestled this reputation for itself through control of the western media it remains to be confirmed if you can buy a washer/dryer at 3am in New York or if you can find a post office open until midnight anywhere in Manhattan!

Although the picture only captures a slither of that city buzz, with the spectacle that is heartily indigenous to our part of the world, but it also rears an ugly facet of life in Egypt these days where everyday urban poverty is such a fact of life it doesn't even warrant a second glance ... I am amazed at how apathetic people have become and how much worse everyone's life seems to have become ... but if there is anything I have taken to heart from Christopher Nolan's master piece "The Dark Knight" (2008) as articulated by the unfortunate villain Harvey Dent/Harvey Two-Face: "The night is darkest just before the dawn" and it has been pretty bleak for quite sometime now so let's hope dawn is as close as it should be!

we do have a great sense of rhythm!

I think I have had enough with a 9 to 5 job, and I would much rather start my own business ...

I have a couple of marketable ideas I wish to test but between a full-time job, a back-breaking* study schedule, and with the end of it all so near I can't quit just now. I will linger on for another day!

Besides, I can always start my own guest-house by the beach when I am old (i.e. 30)

So for the time being, I continue to do what I know best, comforted by the fact that I am a member of an extraordinary league of gentlemen (and ladies of course) ... by the way, that film sucked ass and not in a good way!

Below are some examples of what makes us unique ... and just for your information, we always do that dance when our books balance at the end of each month ...

1. Monty Python classic: a short instruction video for a hip new dance (ca. 1948) but I heard vintage stuff are hot now ... so don't be shy and let them feel the heat on the dance floors this Saturday night!

By the way, I just love how they call the calculator an "adding machine" because that is exactly what my manager calls them right before we make her a warm cup of milk, and she takes her nap!

2. David Letterman's "Top 10 Reasons I Like Being An Accountant": not really for the sake of hearing the reasons themselves, because they are not all funny although I love #6 and is actually my only reason for doing this job ... but please feast your eyes on my gorgeous colleagues ...

3. I never thought spring break as an accountant could beat the crazy college days, but it does!!

Ever wondered why your accounting department always buys a new photocopier every April 16? ... Now you know!

4. Accountants are gay!
You only need an old Dolly Parton song, and they show their true colors ... try playing that track at your office and have fun watching the accountant squirm in their seats dealing with internal struggles!

Cutie in lower-right-hand-corner (videolog - 01:25) keeps my hopes alive that I might go to the office one day to find him sitting next to me ... those eye-brows!!!

I (heart) my job!

* No, that does NOT mean having gay sex without using condoms ... you are thinking of barebacking you sick bastard! ... Don't be silly, always cover your willy!

unleash the artist within!

I admit that I might be more obsessed with the randomness of life than most people (to the point that I have been writing a failed film-script about this idea since 2004) but I dare anyone to refute the premise that a major part of our lives lies beyond our control and is in fact a construct of a series of random events!

I confess I haven't grasped the full thesis of Chaos Theory, and that most of my understanding comes from recent films including Magnolia, The Butterfly Effect and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but I firmly believe that despite being run by random events, by taking part in the everyday game of life we positively contribute towards this randomness.

Maybe this is why I immediately fell in love with this game (?) or maybe I still don't feel like studying and would rather do anything than turn a single page ...

At some point in our lives, we all had the fantasy of creating a band and the lucky few amongst us are living that dream ... but no matter which of those groups we have the privilege of joining, the challenge of coming up with a cool band name is always a daunting task ... so why think about it when you can let be decided on your behalf like many other things in your life ... randomly!

3 small steps ...

Step #1
The 1st title on the page is the name of your band.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random

Step #2
The last 4 words of the very last quote is the title of your album.
http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3

Step #3
The 3rd picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/

Again, I would like to claim credit for myself, but I have too much integrity to do it ... damn!

Source eludes me, because I stumbled upon it during a typical late-night drunken surfing of the world wide web ...

With no further ado, here is the first album cover for my band DURANUS ... I love the picture, and just for spite I am seriously thinking about creating a band and calling it DURANUS ... but it might be a variation, like D-UR-ANUS ... a very cool name for a gay disco band!

If there is anyone out there who tried this before, I would love to see the results ...

My Freedom!

This could very well be the reason I created this blog!

Granted that I have been thinking about starting a blog forever now, but never got around to it. Lack of time, possibly .... lack of motivation, definitely!

So when motivation presented itself in the form of a super-cool visually-stimulating personality test (with results I actually liked) I couldn't pass the chance to save it and share it with the world.

Check it out:

Happy self-discovery!
